Survival Skills For Healthy Families             Parenting Elementary  Age Kids
Middle Childhood: 5 -12 years

A workshop for parents, grandparents and teachers of school-age children from five to twelve.
Parent education workshop, designed to improve the lives of families with school age children  by providing them with knowledge, strategies and skills that can lead to more open, effective communication and build stronger, lasting relationships.
  • The Nurturing Parenting curriculum—specifically designed for parents of school age children—is an evidence based course designed to empower parents with new knowledge, beliefs, strategies and skills that can lead to healthier lifestyle choices and foster lifelong relationships.
  • Participants gain knowledge and confidence by working in small groups, sharing ideas and supporting each other.  They come away from the group sessions more aware of the complexities and challenges of interacting with children, and equipped with the skills to overcome those challenges.
  • Families strengthen their relationships and gain empathy for one another as they discover how to build a balance between work, play, school, and family.

Topics Discussed
  • The importance of rules, and how parents can increase compliance by involving children in making family rules.
  • The benefits of teaching children about positive and negative choices, and how such choices can lead to either positive consequences or negative consequences.
  • The steps that can be taken to ensure more effective discipline.
  • The ways in which families can spend time working and playing together and why such activities are important.
  • How children can make positive contributions to family life, friendships, school and the greater community.
  • How adults can improve their relationships, work more effectively as a team and communicate better with each other.
  • The positive and sometimes negative impact that change can have on a family and how to deal with such change.
  • How to identify family problems and work together to solve those problems.

Survival Skills For Healthy Families  is a six week workshop, which meets for two hours, once per week.

  • Workshop is open to the public.
  • Free childcare for children is available with a reservation.
  • Certificates awarded upon completion.
